Girls play Warriors tough

Catty basketball fans who didn't come to the Catasauqua Gym missed a good effort by the girls against Wilson in a 48-36 loss.

"The game was truly closer than what the final score indicates," Janae Matos said.

Underclassmen did most of the scoring as Shiloh Sziy had 17 points, Amarys Moten six, Katie Buczynski four, Sam Schnabel also scored four, and Janae Matos had three while senior point guard Olivia Falko added two.

Catty came out with a slower pace concentrating on ball movement. Sophomore Sziy used her strong inside game to get off to a quick start, scoring Catty's first eight points. Buczynski injured her right knee and missed significant time while she was tended to by the trainer. But, the girls moved the ball well in Katie's absence and played to a 18-17 lead at the half.

Buczynski returned to start the second half and both teams were trading baskets back and forth in the third quarter. Catty maintained the lead after three, 31-29.

With four minutes remaining, Sziy scored a big basket and was fouled on the play. Sziy converted the three-point play for 36-35 lead.

But in the end, Wilson was able to convert their free throws to pull away and the Lady Rough Riders were unable to match Wilson on the offensive end.

Coach Dennis Fry's Lady Warriors went on a 19-point scoring binge in the fourth quarter. Casey Carl sizzled the nylon on four three-pointers and led the Royal and Gold with 20 points.

Shaye Smith and Madison Quinn really stepped up their game since the Catty Summer League, netting 12 each. Quinn tickled the twine for three, three balls. Carla Dutt added four points.

It was Lady Roughies longest road trip of the season up to take on the 7-3 Lady Spartans. Coach Dave Stefani's girls made it win number eight.

Catasauqua trailed 31-14 after intermission.

Angelica Bertola rocked Catty with 23 points and is one of the leading scorers with 232 points this year. Bertola sank three treys.

Juniors Janae Matos and Katie Buczynski paced the Brown and White inside and outside attack with ten points each.

The Spartans Kelly Leming knocked down a trey while scoring nine points. Amanda Smith did the same and finished with seven. Virginia Pope scored three points.

Sophomore Shiloh Sziy controlled the glass for Catty and added seven points. Olivia Falko, senior point guard scored four and Amarys Moten popped in four.

Notre Dame Green Pond's Gabby Altmire had her career-high best at home last Saturday with 18 points in a 65-38 win over Catty.

Katie Buczynski had 14 points. Altmire scored 14 points in the first half of the win.

Shiloh Sziy registered a double-double for Catty with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Schnabel added seven points. Fellow senior Olivia Falko made a bucket and junior Janae Matos scored a basket.
