Although Coplay Borough did not see a noticeable increase in overall police activity in 2012, the number of assaults is on the rise.

According to a report presented by police Chief Vincent Genovese at the Feb. 5 council workshop, the borough experienced 2,988 incidents in 2012, compared with 2,987 in 2011.

In 2011 there were six assaults reported, compared to 20 in 2012, said Genovese.

In 2011 there were 115 reported crimes and in 2012 the total was 166.

"We are seeing more crimes against persons which is a big concern," said Genovese. "It seems to be the way society is going as we've all noticed. Other crimes were up slightly but not as much as assaults."

Total arrests and clearances – a clearance is a crime solved by arrest – were up for 2012, tallying 71. That number is up by 25 from 2011.

Compared with area municipalities of a similar size, the Coplay Police Department responded to the highest number of calls by a margin of close to 1,000. Monthly call volume for 2012 averaged 249.

The following incidents were reported in 2012, according to Genovese's report;
