Colonial Youth Football League adds three teams
The Colonial Youth Football League (CYFL) will open the 2013 season with three new teams.
The league accepted and approved the addition of the Pen Argyl Green Knights, Saucon Valley Panthers and the Upper Saucon Storm. This is the second increase in as many years. The Rough Riders and Bangor Slaters began league play in 2012.
The CYFL formed in 2011 with seven associations. The founding members included: Northwestern, Northern Lehigh, Southern Lehigh, Wilson, Williams Township, Salisbury and Palisades.
The league will be divided into two divisions, North and South. Catasauqua will be in the North with Pen Argyl, Northwestern, Bangor, Northern Lehigh and Southern Lehigh. The South Division consists of Williams Township, Wilson, Upper Saucon, Salisbury, Saucon Valley and Palisades. Each team will play five division games and three non-division games. All teams will compete for one of eight playoff spots.
The league is comprised of student-athletes ranging in age from 5-13-years-old. There are three weight classes: 90-pound, 110-pound, and 130-pound, as well as a flag level.
Flag Division consists of 5-6-year-olds who cannot turn 7 before Sept. 1. In the 90-pound division, 7-8-year-olds, cannot turn 9 before Sept. 1. Maximum weight is 115. The 110 Division consists of 9-10-year-olds who cannot turn 11 before Sept. 1. Maximum weight is 135 pounds. In the 130 Division, 11-13-year-olds cannot turn 14 at any time during the season. Maximum weight is 155 pounds, and maximum weight for 13-year-olds is 115 pounds.
Registration dates and times are being finalized at this time and will be made available in the near future. Practice begins July 29 at a site and time to be determined.
Regular season games begin the weekend of Aug. 24-25 and will continue to the weekend of Oct. 12-13. First round of playoffs will be Oct. 19-20; second round the weekend of Oct. 26-27; and the championship games will be played Nov. 2 or 3. All playoff sites, times and teams are TBD.
In addition to the annual lottery ticket fundraiser, Catasauqua will hold a car wash with proceeds going to Breast Cancer Awareness. This event raised just over $300 last summer and we had a great time. The organization is also looking at running a hoagie sale, where those profits will go toward purchasing equipment.
The annual apparel and jacket fundraiser is going on at this time. By purchasing these items from Schuylkill Valley Sports, you not only show off your Rough Rider spirit, but it is a great way to help the football program.
You can also get a hold of one of the committee members for a form. The Committee consists of Joe Kovacs - League Representative, Brian Monahan, Travis Brett, Wade Rhinehard and Chad Bellesfield.
