Catasauqua High School softball catcher, Janae Matos, will play for Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team for the second consecutive year this June.

"A lot of us are coming back for a second year. We'll have more understanding of what the experience is like, and we should have an upperhand on most teams," Matos said.

Last year, the Lehigh Valley team placed second in the double-elimination tournament which features teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

"I think we'll be good. There are some Colonial League girls on the team who I played against, and I know what they have. It's a really solid lineup," said Matos.

The tournament also gives players the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of college coaches.

"It kind of makes me nervous at first, but I just realize that I have to play my game," Matos said.

Matos's primary position will be catcher, and her secondary position will be first base.

"I like playing catcher better because I'm more involved. I'm looking forward to playing with the girls I played against for so many years," she said.

Matos believes that getting as far as the District 11 final with her Catasauqua High School team will be a plus, regarding her performance on the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team.

"It led me more into the season, and I think it will help," said Matos.

The rest of the roster is made up of: Emmaus's Olivia Marcks, Liberty's Nicole Iasiello and Emily Cecchini, Salisbury's Jenna Keet and Meghan Williams, Northampton's Hanna Peters, Northern Lehigh's Amber Thomas, Saucon Valley's Arastina Barry, Nazareth's Katie Thompson, Pleasant Valley's Jordan Meckes and Madison Shaneberger, Southern Lehigh's Krystyna Elsner, Pen Argyl's Emily Smull and Alyssa Weaver, and Notre Dame's Sam Curcio will compete in the double-elimination tournament scheduled for June 24-27 at FDR Park in Philadelphia.

This is the ninth season for Carpenter Cup softball, sponsored by the Philadelphia Phillies, giving college coaches the opportunity to observe sophomore and junior softball players from the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas.

Last year, the Lehigh Valley team took second place against teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. In 2006 and 2008, the Lehigh Valley team was crowned Carpenter Cup Champions, and in 2007, Lehigh Valley placed second.

Coach John Eyer, who is Emmaus' head softball coach, will be assisted by Scott Bortz and Blake Morgan.

"We are looking forward to more success this year," Eyer said.

The tournament is scheduled to run June 24-28 at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
