Your look ahead at Valley Arts

Are you ready for some classical? The Allentown Symphony Orchestra begins its classical season a month early this year. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson, above, is guest soloist, 8 p.m. Sept. 13; 3 p.m. Sept. 14, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown. Ohlsson and the ASO perform Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," based on the melody from Paganini's 24th Violin Caprice. The concert opens with the "Overture to the Opera Prince Igor" by Borodin and includes the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5. Tickets: allentownsymphony.org; 610-432-6715

Coming "Full Circle": The opening reception for "Full Circle: Rudy S. Ackerman, A Retrospective," is 6 - 8 p.m. Sept. 17, The David E. Rodale and Rodale Family Galleries, The Baum School of Art, 510 Linden St., Allentown, where the exhibition continues through Oct. 18. The retrospective of painting, printmaking and sculpture, including, above, "Small Sun Disk" (Brazed copper, 2010), spanning Ackerman's 50-year career in the arts is curated by Ann Lalik, Gallery Director and Arts Coordinator at Penn State Lehigh Valley and Ackerman's daughter. Says Lalik, "It's clear to see that his work revolves around circles and his spheres have symbolized a number of familiar images over the years." Ackerman, a native of Allentown, is Baum Director of Exhibitions and Collections and was Baum Executive Director 1965 - 2007. He was chair, Moravian College Department of Art, 1963 - 2002. Ackerman received a B.S. in Art Education from Kutztown University, M.S. in Education from Temple University, and an Ed.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. Ackerman will be the honored guest at The Baum School of Art's Annual Gala Oct. 18. The reception, which includes wine and light fare, is free and open to the public. 8th Annual Barn Tour: The 8th Annual Barn Tour of Saucon Valley Barns will be held 9:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. (rain or shine) Sept. 13, starting at the Beethoven Waldheim Club Pavilion, 1984 Waldheim Road, Lower Saucon Township. The self-guided and self-paced tour, sponsored by The Saucon Valley Conservancy, includes several examples of typical Pennsylvania barns. Robert Ensminger and Gregory Huber will present an overview of barn tour highlights. A tour guide booklet with map will be provided at registration. A host at each barn will be available. Also on the tour is the Heller barn site with its front wall remnant and iconic stone arch recently stabilized. Proceeds benefit the preservation and restoration of the Michael Heller Barn, Heller Homestead Park, 1890 - 92 Friedensville Road (Water Street), Lower Saucon Township.
