Running Ramblings: A look at the Emmaus Splash and Dash

Thursday, July 30, 2015 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Runners from across the Lehigh Valley participated in the Third Annual Emmaus Splash and Dash 5K July 22.

Forty runners ran the 3.1-mile course that started at Emmaus Community Park, meandered through the streets of the town's south side, and finished at the park.

After the early evening race that began at 6:30 p.m., runners could also cool off with an optional use of the community pool.

Matt Gillette of Orefield was the top male finisher as he logged a time of 16:57, a stellar 5:28 pace per mile.

Mike Miller, Allentown, was second with a time of 19:34 (6:21); and Matt Bianco, Allentown, was third with a time of 19:41 (6:21).

Caitlin Perry of Allentown, was the top female finisher as she recorded a time of 19:58, a pace of 6:27; Alexis Vongzart, Schnecksville, was second in a time of 22:37 (7:18), and Alexa Chaikowsky, Bethlehem, was third in a time of 23:43 (7:39).

Cash prizes and gift cards were among prizes rewarded for runners who finished among the top three in various age categories.

Proceeds from the race benefitted the Emmaus Parks and Recreation Department and the Emmaus Special Entertainment Commission.

Runners also had the option to sign up for a special package rate that included the KNBT Halloween 5K Oct. 17.

Chris Schmidt, a manager at the Finish Line Running Store who helped sponsor the race, stated how the race has received mixed responses since its inception.

"When we first started the 5K, we ran it around Memorial Day, and nobody wanted to go into the pool because it was too cold," he stated. "Last year, we had it in July and it worked out better. We're hoping to build this race as it continues. We realize that July isn't always an attractive month to run because of the heat, but we have been fortunate the past two years.

"It is a prelude to our annual Halloween Race that attracts about 400 runners."
