Amy Zanelli, candidate for Lehigh County Commissioner District 3, has announced that she will seek the Democratic endorsement in the May 16 primary race.

“Reclaiming our democracy is a marathon, not a sprint,” she said. “The starting line is local politics.”

Zanelli, 35, of West Bethlehem, is a licensed real estate agent with Keller Williams. Coming from a family of union workers and veterans, she has an innate perspective of the needs of Lehigh County, she said. Her work in human services and with the criminal justice system, along with extensive advocacy work, has bolstered her ability to apply fiscally responsible solutions to issues in the community. This includes Cedarbrook Nursing Home, which she considers a vital component of senior services. She opposes privatization of the facility.

She can speak with firsthand knowledge of the economic, cultural and social challenges facing the county at a time when tight budgets demand that local services be administered efficiently, effectively and with compassion.

“I know Amy and she has what it takes,” said Shawna Knipper, cochair of Women’s March PA. “Her passion and understanding of our community are unmatched. Her experience as a union steward and caretaker of our youth and seniors distinguish her as a true voice of our residents. She will undoubtedly be an effective leader for Lehigh County.”

Zanelli’s decade-long professional career in community service and advocacy includes in-home family counseling, substance abuse, parent education and mental illness. As a child abuse investigator for the state of New Jersey, she worked with children and families and served as a safe space liaison for LGBTQ youth. Her leadership and passion resonated as a CWA shop steward, and she currently uses these skills as a mentor for troubled youth in Allentown for Tabor Mentor Services and as a volunteer at Calypso Elementary in Bethlehem.

Zanelli has earned degrees in sociology, forensic anthropology and criminology from Rutgers University. She lives with her wife and three children in West Bethlehem.

Lehigh County District 3 includes the boroughs of Catasauqua and Hellertown, Hanover Township and parts of the cities of Allentown and Bethlehem.
