Allentown Central: ‘Anything Goes’
“Anything Goes,” with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, cruises to the stage at Allentown Central Catholic High School, at 7 p.m. April 20, 21 and 2 and 7 p.m. April 22, auditorium, Allentown Central Catholic High School, 301 N. Fourth St., Allentown.
Written by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, later revised by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, the musical comedy debuted on Broadway in 1934.
“Anything Goes” features the misadventures of Billy Crocker, a stowaway aboard an ocean liner, who falls in love with American debutante Hope Harcourt. Cocker is aided by gangster Moonface Martin and nightclub singer Reno Sweeney in his pursuit of the heiress who is engaged to stuffy Englishman Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.
Kateri Swavely-Verenna directs the Allentown Central Catholic High School production. Assistant director and choreographer Adrienne Motley, music director Hunter Chadeayne, and artwork coordinator Julie Bruen provide additional support.
“Anything Goes,” “You’re the Top” and “I Get a Kick Out of You” are among the featured songs.
The 1987 Broadway revival received 10 Tony Award nominations, winning three. The 2011 Broadway revival received three Tony Awards of nine Tony nominations.
