James Everett Kern Sr.

James Everett Kern Sr., 87, of Northampton, died April 10, 2017, at home. He was the husband of the late Joyce (Lazar) Kern.

Born in Coplay, he was a son of the late James T. and the late Mary (Everett) Kern.

He was a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1947 to 1950. In 1948, he was a mechanic for the United Nations staff, supervising the application of the Palestine truce under the authority of the United Nations mediator on Palestine and the Security Council truce commission.

He was a bricklayer and electrician for the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 40 years until he retired in 1991.

He was a birdwatcher and a photographer.

He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Evans and Diane Schoch; a son, James E. Jr.; four grandchildren, Blake, Cody, Kristen and James; and five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brylee, Henry, Emily and Leilani.

He was predeceased by a sister, Althea Sterner; and a grandson, Joel Evans.
