Speeding is permitted at local pinewood derby
Twenty-two Cub Scouts from Cub Pack 94 recently competed in the 2017 pinewood derby. The race took place at the pack’s sponsoring church, St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Catasauqua.
The Scouts, with the help of an adult or by themselves, fashioned their official BSA pinewood derby kit into a super cool race car. North Valley District rules must be adhered to, including a maximum weight of 5 ounces, and using no lubrication except for graphite for the axles and wheels.
At the event, each Scout’s car races four heats, and the fastest average time wins.
Speed is the key, sportsmanship is a must, and the competition is exciting.
This year, the difference between first place and 22nd place was a mere 0.2 seconds.
Trophies are awarded for the top five finishers and best in show, and every participant, from sixth to 22nd place, was recognized for their efforts with a participant trophy.
The top five finishers qualified to move on to compete at the North Valley District race April 29. The sixth-place finish is the alternate entry for the district race.
