Scouts install blessing box in Catasauqua

Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 6242 earned their Bronze Award by constructing a blessing box and collecting donations to fill the box.

The troop meets at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Mickleys, in Whitehall.

The Bronze Award is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn. Junior Girl Scouts are in grades 4 and 5.

Along with teamwork, the Scouts learned valuable skills including problem solving, using hand and power tools, painting and giving back to their community.

The girls spent several troop meetings constructing and painting the box. Outside the meeting, they collected donations of nonperishable food items and toiletries. These items, collected from family members, friends and neighbors, were placed in the blessing box.

Community members are able to take a nonperishable food item or toiletry item as needed and are encouraged to make donations of nonperishable and toiletry items if they are able.

Troop cookie profits were used to purchase the supplies needed for this project.

The troop leaders are Holly Croll and Crystal Horvath, and the Bronze Award coordinator is Stacy Zellner.

The blessing box is located at 401 Howertown Road, Catasauqua. It is in front of the home of Mercedes Escoto, administrator for the Everything FREE Lehigh Valley Helping Those in Need, a Facebook group.
