Range Road to close Sept. 7 for accident reconstruction
Whitehall Township police will close Range Road between Eberhart Road and the rear entrance to Whitehall Commons (Walmart) at 7 a.m. Sept. 7 so officers can follow up with accident reconstruction for the fatal vehicle crash that occurred Sept. 1. The closure is expected to last less than three hours.
Township officers will be assisted by the Pennsylvania State Police, who will be bringing a laser mapping system to speed the process.
According to police, Josephine A. Nolt, 87, of Whitehall Township, died in the crash Sept. 1. She was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with another vehicle in the 2600 block of Range Road around 1:30 p.m.
According to township police Lt. Greg Bealer, the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions, nearly in front of the former Mulligans golf center.
The vehicle traveling south on Range Road, Bealer said, attempted to pass another, uninvolved vehicle and struck the northbound vehicle, in which Nolt was a passenger.
According to the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, Nolt was pronounced dead 4:13 p.m. An autopsy was scheduled for Sept. 4 to determine the exact cause of death.
Bealer said the township must do a full reconstruction before deciding whether charges can be filed. He also said there are several interviews that still have to be conducted due to the number of witnesses. In addition, the vehicles must be inspected for possible mechanical defects, along with multiple search warrants to be executed at the direction of the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.
“All of this, along with the normal process of deciding whether or not charges are warranted based on all of the above, can take several months,” Bealer added.
