Board OKs teacher salaries for new year
Some Catasauqua Area School District teachers will notice a change in their paychecks for the 2017-18 academic year.
The school board approved the collective bargaining teacher unit salary schedule for 2017-18 at the Sept. 12 board meeting.
The vote was 5-0.
Board President Penny Hahn, Vice President Carol Cunningham and board member Mary Alice Hartranft were not present for the meeting.
Abstaining from the vote, due to a personal conflict issue, was board member Dale Hein.
A total of 105 teachers are included in the salary changes.
The approved salaries range from $55,275 to $91,966 for the year.
Salaries, according to district Superintendent Robert Spengler, are influenced and modified by the number of years taught in the district, years of education, the degree, number of credits and steps.
Catasauqua Education Association President Jonathan Kiefer told The Press the approval that occurred at Tuesday’s meeting exclusively dealt with the salaries of education association teachers, pursuant to the contract already in force.
Kiefer highlighted what is involved, in terms of steps on teacher salaries.
“Steps on our salary schedule, in general, relate to an employee’s length of service,” he said. “Each year, given satisfactory performance, a teacher will move to the next step on the salary schedule. This will continue to occur each year until the teacher reaches the final step attainable on the salary schedule.”
Spengler said the approval of teachers’ salaries falls under the teacher contract approved by the board earlier this year.
“This agreement will allow us to attract and retain high-quality professionals while having a minimal impact on the school district budget,” Spengler previously said of the contract approved in January.
