Young Roughs compete in JV and junior high tournaments

The Catasauqua varsity wrestling team is getting set for the individual District 11 tournament this weekend and is hoping to duplicate some of the successes those in the younger Catty programs have had to this point.

For the varsity, Tyler Melendez enters as the fourth seed for the Roughs and is hoping to advances to regionals.

Head coach Joe Russo said other Roughies who are entering the tournament are: freshman Jacob Nye and Austin Brett, sophomore Lavonte Bouie, junior Brad Panto and seniors Derrick Rodriguez, Oscar Cordon, Jack Manogue, Austin Gorr and Jacob Latch.

This past weekend, the JV team competed in their tournament. Adam Reinhardt took fourth place, competing against the entire AA and AAA field in District 11. Zack Scheirer, Doug Scott, Jeremy Saleh, Ben Langsdorf, Sebastian Henry, and Bradshaw Henning also competed well in the tournament but did not place.

The junior high team had seven wrestlers who recently made it to the second day of their tournament. Two made it to the semifinals and five were in wrestlebacks.

At 87, Gavin Fehr lost in semis to Bunting from Nazareth. Fehr finished tournament in sixth place. At 102, Jarryn Hartranft lost in semis to Condomitti from Northampton and defaulted out to sixth place. Brendan Nye and Donovan Gair went 1-1 on second day and finished top-12 at 77 and 157, respectively. Kaleb Croft, Dominic Melendez, and Dylan Kalynych all wrestled tough, but lost first match on second day and were eliminated.

The team finished 29th place with 48 points.

Back to the varsity, the Colonial League recently released its 2018 wrestling all-stars. Catty’s lone mention was Oscar Cordon at 126 of the honorable mention team.
