CHS softball team young
Simply put, the Roughies softball team is young.
Emma Bellesfield, Alexia Reichl, and Maddy Zangl are the lone seniors on the roster. It will be a true test of patience.
In their first two games of this season, the Roughies suffered a 27-1 loss to Notre Dame and a 16-1 defeat to Northwestern. Catty has 16 players on its roster.
“Right now, we are giving away too many outs,” said head coach Bobby Thomas. “We really don’t have a lot of experience. Against Notre Dame, we gave up seven or eight outs in the first inning.
“Instead of it being 4-0, it should have been scoreless.”
“Emma (Bellesfield) Alexia (Reichl), and Maddy (Zangl) are really our only experienced players. We have to keep working to piece this together. It is still tough to tell if this is all about inexperience.”
Sophomore Hannah Towich, who threw the majority of games last season, will team with freshman Erica Kuhar to anchor the Roughies’ pitching staff.
“Hannah (Towich) was on the mound for us last year, and she should have a good year for us,” said Thomas. “Erica Kuhar is a young pitcher and she will help us.
“When the one is pitching, the other one will be in the outfield for us.”
With the remainder of the Roughies’ season being a trial by error, Thomas will seek to piece together a steady lineup.
Bellesfield will be behind the plate as well as seeing time at first, while Reichl and Zangl will be in the outfield. Reichl suffered an injury to her pitching arm last season, and Thomas her pitching career is over.
Freshman Hailey Deschaine steadily has been progressing.
“We’re just trying to figure out the right combinations,” he said. “We’ll be looking at people in different spots. Emma (Bellesfield) has been playing some first base.”
Overall, it will be about maturing over time
“We just have to gain experience,” said Thomas, who is beginning his 10th season at the helm. “We are going over a lot of basic things that take up a lot of time.
“They’re coming along. We just need to play more games.”
