Coplay eliminated by Salisbury

The Coplay Legion baseball team had a good postseason run, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals before being ousted by Salisbury recently.

Coplay had to play a single elimination game against Southern Lehigh to start the Leigh Valley Legion Baseball League playoffs. The 7-3 victory opened the gate to their second round game versus Lower Macungie where they were now facing double elimination. That was advantageous since they lost to Lower Macungie 10-4.

However, they stayed alive with a 6-2 win over Northern Valley last Saturday which put them in the quarterfinal round against top-seeded Salisbury.

Sunday’s game against the regular season champs saw them jump out to an early 7-3 lead. However, head coach Jack Lisicky said that Salisbury scored six runs in the middle innings to take the lead. He said that they got a run back in the sixth, and had the tying runner on base in the seventh, but couldn’t bring the equalizer home.

“We just came up a little short,” said Lisicky.

He said they played well enough to win, and felt they were the better team that day, but some bad bounces helped contribute to the loss.

Jack Lisicky said that they got a good starting effort from Catty’s Zach Bilder. Zachary Hamscher relieved Bilder later in the game and also pitched well for Coplay, according to Lisicky.

Coplay’s offense on Sunday was powered by a number of players, including Jake Lisicky who had three hits and two RBIs, while Robbie Lamm had two hits on Sunday. Alex Bruneio also had a pair of hits, knocking in a run, while Bilder also stroked two hits in the game. Finally, Andrew Martinez laced a double, bringing home a run, and Joe Lisicky added a hit and RBI in the elimination game.

With the loss, Coplay got knocked out to the postseason, ending its 2018 season.

In their game against Northern Valley, Jack Lisicky said that Bruneio exhibited the bulldog mentality that made him a standout pitcher at Whitehall during his career. Lisicky said that he went five strong innings, tossing 103 pitches to get the win.

“That was huge for us that day,” said Jack Lisicky.

In that win, Lamm provided a big blow with a home run.

With the 2018 Legion season in the books, Jack Lisicky has now completed his first season as Coplay’s skipper. He said he enjoyed being around the players who were a great group of guys to coach. He believed that they were as good as anyone in the league, and firmly believed they had the talent to win the LVLBL title.
