Sheldon and Mary Ann Endy went to Norfolk and Williamsburg, Va., for a vacation in 2016. They were only 15 miles north of Fort Eustis and decided to extend their trip.
They visited the U.S. Army Transportation Museum to learn about the association between the Army and circuses. The relationship began in Europe around 1900. Various European armies studied the circus methods used to load and unload their trains rapidly and feed a group of people quickly, which was done with mobile kitchens and small ranges that could be taken apart and set up quickly.
Tom Hourt and his family reawakened memories of clear toy candy as they demonstrated its creation at a recent Palmerton Area Historical Society meeting.
His wife, Jodie, and son, Mitchell, are integral parts of the candy-making business, which begins each year with the call of, “It’s candy weather.” The air must be cold and dry.
A senior expo was held at Bethany Wesleyan Church, Cherryville, Sept. 15. State Rep. Zach Mako, R-183rd, sponsored the expo to show what local companies and agencies have available to help them. Eighty vendors participated.
Mako said he was glad to see people come out. He stood at the door and shook hands with all attendees, asking if they had any special concerns he might be able to help them with.
The most frequently mentioned concern was the property tax situation.

State Rep. Julie Harhart, who is representing the district in her 11th term of office, has announced she is not seeking re-election this year.
In Lehigh County, the district covers parts of Whitehall, Washington and South Whitehall townships and Slatington Borough.
In Northampton County, it includes North Catasauqua, Walnutport and Northampton boroughs, Lehigh and Allen townships and parts of Moore Township.
Marc Grammes of Washington Township kicked off his campaign for state representative in the 183rd Legislative District during a press conference March 22 at the Slatington Trailhead.
The district covers Slatington Borough and parts of Whitehall, Washington and South Whitehall townships in Lehigh County.
In Northampton County, the 183rd includes North Catasauqua, Walnutport, Northampton, Lehigh Township, Allen Township and parts of Moore Township.
Julie Harhart, a Republican, is the incumbent in the district.
The Lehigh Gap Nature Center, Slatington, was green with wreaths during Christmas craft day Dec. 7.
Greens, brought by several different people, were piled outside to make the wreaths.
In addition, to the wreaths, attendees could make pinecone bird feeders and tree ornaments.
Bill Mineo and his wife, Lorraine, have been coordinating the wreath project for several years.
The bases are made by wrapping grapevines in a circle being careful to leave a point on one side, which will be the top for hanging the wreath.
