Spotlight On: Viktorija Geèytë goes for Go Trio at MSH

Viktorija Geèytë is guest vocalist with Gene Perla's Go Trio, 7:30 p.m. May 16, in the "Jazz Upstairs" cabaret series, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown.

Perla, bass, is joined by Sean Gough, piano, and Colby Inzer, drums. Sitting in is Joe Magnarelli, trumpet, flugelhorn.

Geèytë, born in Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, began her singing career at age five with the prodding of her grandmother whose friend gave singing lessons to local children. The lessons grew to public appearances in the surrounding areas. Soon, Geèytë had steady work, even at five-years-old.

The Jazz Cabaret Series continues with a performance by Gene Perla and Funk Xpress, 7:30 p.m. March 21, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown.

For nearly five decades, virtuoso bassist Perla has travelled the world, making his mark as a jazz musician playing with Frank Sinatra, Elvin Jones, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Willie Bobo.

Each member of Funk Xpress is a world-class musician.

New York-based keyboardist Jon Ballantyne is noted for improvisation and driving rhythms.

Saxophonist-flautist David Liebman is in transition, with a new quintet and new music, which traverses elements of free jazz and re-arrangements of standards, all infused with the complex time signatures and harmonies being explored by contemporary jazz artists.

Among the awards Lynnie Godfrey has amassed during her entertainment career are a Drama Desk nomination for her Broadway debut in "Eubie!" and Dramalogue and NAACP Awards for her supporting actress outstanding performance in "No Place To Be Somebody."

Godfrey appears in the "Jazz Upstairs" series, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18, Rodale Community Room, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown.

In addition to "Eubie!" on Broadway, she's had roles on the TV shows, "Brewster Place" and "L.A. Law," and was in the movie, "V.I. Warshawski."

It's not unusual to see the Rev. Greg Edwards behind a podium delivering a sermon in Resurrected Life Church, 144 N. Ninth St., Allentown.

It's also not unusual to see and hear clarinetist-saxophonist, the Rev. Greg Edwards, at one of his many performances in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas.

Craig Kastelnik & Friends go to town

Craig Kastelnik and his wife, Pat Flaherty, have been delighting Lehigh Valley jazz fans for more than 40 years, playing together as Kato, and with other local musicians in various configurations.

Craig Kastelnik & Friends, including Flaherty, vocals; Tom Kozic, guitar; Bernard Purdie, drums, perform at 7:30 p.m. July 19, Jazz Cabaret Series, Rodale Community Room, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown.

Kastelnik, 59, has been active in music since the age of four as a vocalist and keyboardist, specializing on the Hammond B-3 organ.

If you are a fan who regularly attends the "Jazz Upstairs" monthly series in the Rodale Community Room, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown, you know that one of the keys to its success is a mix of different jazz styles.

That philosophy continues 7:30 p.m. May 17 with an evening of music by Hot Bijouxx, featuring vocalist Kristen Jasionowski, guitarist Ryan McNeely, accordionist Dallas Viety and percussionist Kevin Ripley.

According to Jasionowski, the band plays what she calls hot swing.
