Simcoe sponsoring art contest

In celebration of Farmers Market Days in the borough, Simcoe Gallery is sponsoring Paint Outside the Market Basket.

Artists are welcome to pick up a basket during market hours, 3-7 p.m., beginning Sept. 10, at The Lyric Commons, 2015 Main St. Baskets are available on a first-come basis, and the painted baskets are due Oct. 8 by 7 p.m.

Three prizes will be awarded at a reception on Oct. 15, 6 p.m.

St. John's meets Sept. 9

The St. John's Friendly Fifties group will hold its 22nd anniversary meeting 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, in the social hall, 1343 Newport Ave.

The rosary will be prayed at 11:30 a.m.

Lunch will follow in the social hall. Mike Skweir will provide the music.

Today, Aug. 29, is the deadline for tickets for the Friends of the Northampton Area Public Library's chartered bus trip to the Civil War Museum, Harrisburg, and the 13th Annual Civil War Reenactment Train Ride, Middletown, on Saturday, Sept. 21.

Siegfried station to sell railroad memorabilia

The Siegfried Railroad Station, home of the Northampton Area Historical Society, will hold a special garage sale 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the station, located on 21st Street.

Most of the items for sale will be railroad memorabilia – postcards, books, photographs, pamphlets, etc.

Information on other modes of transportation and miscellaneous items will also be available.

Food will be available for purchase.

Assumption BVM church to host picnic Sept. 8

Assumption BVM church will hold its annual picnic Sunday, Sept. 8 at Egypt Memorial Park.

The event begins with a Mass at 11 a.m.., then continues with music, games and food until 7 p.m. The Emil Schanta Band will perform at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The church will also take part in Celebrity Scoop Night Friday, Aug. 23, 6-9 p.m., at Rita's, 3219 Cherryville Road.

A portion of the proceeds benefits the church.

The Northampton Borough Municipal Pool will close for the season tomorrow, Aug. 16. Hours are noon-7 p.m.

The Atlas Cement Company Memorial Museum, 1401 Laubach Avenue, is open to the public on the second and fourth Sundays of each month through September.

Library yard sale this Saturday

The Northampton Area Public Library, 1615 Laubach Ave., will hold a yard sale Saturday, July 27, rain or shine.

Vendors are needed. Spaces are 10 feet and tables can be rented.

Food bank seeking summer donations

The Northampton Area Food Bank asks for your support during its annual Christmas in July food/fundraiser.

Food bank volunteers will b e at Dollar General 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 20-21.

During the summer months, donations decrease. However, clients continue to need assistance. Volunteers will provide a list of items needed.

The food bank is open every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

The Northampton Borough municipal office will be closed July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

Mark your calendar for the 33rd annual Community Days Fair, set for July 10-13 at Municipal Park, Smith Lane and Laubach Avenue.

Hours are Wednesday through Friday, 6-10 p.m., and Saturday, 6-11 p.m.

The event, sponsored by the Northampton Exchange Club, features rides, games, food and entertainment.
