The Northampton Area Public Library is joining with many schools, libraries and groups nationwide to encourage turning off televisions, computers and video games during the upcoming Screen-Free Week.

The library will hold a family craft time Thursday, May 2, 10 a.m. or 6 p.m.

Food bank to host meeting April 30

The Northampton Area Food Bank will hold a general meeting Tuesday, April 30, in the fellowship hall of Queenship of Mary Catholic Church, 1324 Newport Ave.

Dinner will be served 6-7 p.m. with the business meeting to follow.

The board encourages all volunteers, clients and anyone else interested in the food bank to attend this meeting and slide presentation. Area churches are asked to invite their congregants.

The Quota Club of Northampton is running a bus trip fundraiser to New York City to see the Broadway musical "Newsies" on Saturday, May 4.

The bus will leave from Northampton at 8 a.m. for a 2 p.m. show.

Members of the Northampton Area High School Drama Club will present a family storytime, in costume, with stories and songs from their spring musical "Seussical the Musical."

Children of all ages and their families are welcome for the event 6 p.m. Thursday, March 28. Register by stopping by the library, 1615 Laubach Ave., or calling 610-262-7537.

St. Patty's celebration set

The Northampton Liederkranz, 402 E. Ninth St., will host a St. Patty's Day celebration tomorrow, Friday, March 15. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

The band Prugal will entertain from 8 to 11 p.m.

The event is for members and member guests.

A breakfast will be held Sunday, March 17, 8 a.m.-noon, at the club.

There is a cost for both events.

Assumption of the Virgin Mary church, 1301 Newport Ave., is taking orders for Easter nut rolls until March 17.

Selections include nut, poppy seed, apricot, lekvar and raspberry.

If Northampton schools are closed due to inclement weather, the meeting will be rescheduled for March 18.

Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church, 14th Street and Washington Avenue, is having a nut roll sale. Choose from nut, apricot, lekvar, raspberry and poppy seed.

The church is also selling Easter candy. Varieties include coconut eggs, peanut butter eggs and nonpareils.

Orders are due March 3. Pickup is March 16.

Oldies dance, benefit tournament set for Saturday

The Quota Club of Northampton is holding its annual oldies dance on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Northampton Memorial Community Center, 16th Street and Laubach Avenue.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and a dinner buffet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Beverages are included. Deejay Jimmy K will play oldies from 7 to 11 p.m.

Proceeds of this event will go to help a local family with a child fighting cancer.

The Alliance Fire Company, 717 Washington Ave., will hold a pork and sauerkraut dinner Saturday, Feb. 16, 4-7 p.m.

A basket social is also planned for Saturday, 3-8 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 17, noon-2 p.m. The drawing will take place Sunday at 2 p.m.

Pool League to host benefit Feb. 23

The L & N Pool League will be holding its annual benefit tournament at noon Saturday, Feb. 23, at the American Legion Post 353, 1469 Dewey Ave.

This charity fundraiser is for Lisa Slough-Smothers, a single mother of three who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

A Chinese auction will be held 1-5 p.m. You need not be present to win.

Other highlights of the day include a bake sale, raffles and refreshments.
