Colonial League announces basketball playoff pairings

The Colonial League announced its boys and girls playoff brackets this week. Six boys and girls team advanced to the league playoffs and opening round action begins on Saturday, Feb. 11, for both the boys and girls.

At the top of the boys bracket, three-seed Salisbury plays host to six-seed Moravian Academy at 7 p.m. The winner of this game advances to play second-seed Southern Lehigh. This game takes place at Catasauqua at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Moravian hockey game to benefit Derrick Wruble

When the Moravian College ice hockey team takes on DeSales University on Sunday, Jan. 22, it will certainly be a special occasion.

The game takes place outdoors at Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink, but beyond that, this contest will also serve as a fundraiser for Derrick Wruble, a former Northampton ice hockey player who graduated in 2014.

D-11 titles clinched, others on the line; Football slate begins this weekend

On Wednesday, some District 11 titles were settled in the Lehigh Valley Press coverage area, while a few more are on the line Thursday night. In football, the action all gets under way this weekend.

In field hockey, the Emmaus Hornets did it again - their 28th straight district title after a 3-1 victory over Stroudsburg Wednesday night.

D-11 updates: 4A volleyball bracket released; Oct. 27 recaps

District 11 announced the times, locations and matchups for the 4A volleyball tournament. The games begin on Saturday morning at four different locations.

Parkland, the top seed, will host the winner of (8) Whitehall vs. (9) Pocono Mountain East, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. The winner takes on the Trojans at 10:30 a.m.

(4) Emmaus will host (5) Pleasant Valley at 10 a.m. and Delaware Valley will host Wyoming Valley West, however no time was announced for this contest.

Colonial League announces fall playoff matchups

The Colonial League playoffs will get under way beginning next week. Here’s a look at the matchups and dates:

In boys soccer, Northwestern is the top seed and will play four-seed Palisades at Northern Lehigh at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The other game features second-seed Salisbury against third-seed Saucon Valley at Palisades at 7 p.m. also on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

The finals will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Roughie Roundup: Volleyball gets first victory

The Catty girls soccer team lost 3-1 to Palisades.

Hanasia Jenkins scored the Roughs only goal on an assist from Jordan Blose in the first half.

Palisades got first half goals from Shelby Bryan and Melissa Koch to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Katie King would score in the second half for the Pirates.

Catty had four shots on goal while CHS keeper Madison Hicks made 24 saves to help keep the Roughs in the game.

Catty fell Notre Dame East Stroudsburg 3-1.

Roughie Roundup: Girls beat Moravian

The girls soccer team defeated Moravian Academy 2-1.

Moravian got on the board first thanks to a Taylor Hesse free kick that was finished by Rachel Burrow.

But Catty would come back. Jade Biviano would even the score at 1-1 thanks to a pass from Hanasia Jenkins. Biviano placed it in the upper left corner.

In the second half, it was Biviano again with the game-winner which was once against assisted by Jenkins to give Catty the win.

The team lost to Southern Lehigh 5-1.

Tamaqua also knocked off Catty 7-2.

Girls look to get healthy

As of late last week, the Catasauqua girls soccer team is off to a 2-4 start to their season.

Wins have come over Wilson and Jim Thorpe, but while their record may not be what they hoped for at this point, the team has had its share of tough times.

“We have been plagued by injuries,” said head coach Randy Gillespie. “We currently have three starters on crutches along with many other girls that have banged up ankles, shins and knees.”

Roughie Roundup: Field hockey rallies, wins

The Catasauqua field hockey team trailed Wilson 2-1 at one point in the first half Tuesday afternoon, but it would only be for about a minute and a half.

After that point, the Roughs scored five-straight goals to record a 6-2 victory over the Warriors.

Ava Mariana got Wilson on the board just 53 seconds into the game before Kenzie Bradley tied the contest at 1-1 four minutes later with a helper from Jackie Crossley. Mariana would put Wilson up 2-1 and then it was Bradley again evening the score at 2-2 on another assist from Crossley.

Lions Classic canceled

The annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic was scheduled for Sunday, June 5 at Whitehall, however the event was canceled because of a potentially severe line of thunderstorms scheduled to move through the area.

The event features a boys and a girls game with stars from the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and the Colonial League.
