Thursday, July 7, 2016 by STEVE ANDRES in Sports

The combined strength of Coplay and Fullerton made for a perfect mix this summer and helped earn them the regular season title in the Lehigh Valley Legion Baseball League.

They clinched the title after defeating South Parkland 6-5 in the first game of a double header on Friday. The suspended game was tied 5-5 in the ninth inning and Coplay-Fullerton scored the go-ahead run on a hit by Austin Dreisbach, scoring Matt Miller. South Parkland failed to deliver in the bottom of the ninth and Coplay-Fullerton won the title.

It’s been a torrid start for the Coplay-Fullerton Legion baseball team, staying undefeated through their first 12 games.

However, that winning streak was brought to a close on Sunday when Lower Macungie defeated them by a run, 6-5.

Manager Jim Murphy said that they lost the game on an error. They had been down in the game, but fought back to take the lead. Murphy understands that those things are going to happen during the course of a game.

“That’s just part of baseball,” said Murphy.

Coplay and Fullerton merge for LV Legion season

The Lehigh Valley Legion Baseball League did a little reconstructing since their season ended last summer, and those changes have altered the baseball landscape in Whitehall.

That change brings the consolidation of the two teams from the Whitehall-Coplay School District as Fullerton and Coplay have now merged. The team will also feature Catasauqua players.

Manager Jim Murphy, who was Coplay’s skipper last season, said that the Fullerton team got folded into the Coplay. He’s unsure of Fullerton’s future in the LVLBL, but next year he’ll be managing just the Coplay team.

It turned into a Saturday night slugfest when the Carbon Monarchs visited Sammy Ballet Stadium to play Coplay-Fullerton in a Lehigh Valley Legion game.

When the bats stopped pinging, Coplay-Fullerton had weathered a final flurry from the Monarchs who scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but Alex Bruneio’s catch in deep right ended the threat, preserving the 9-7 victory.

Schiffer pitches Fullerton to playoffs

Dakota Schiffer made sure that Fullerton was going to get a seat at the Lehigh Valley Legion Baseball League playoff table.

Fullerton played host to Salisbury last Wednesday in a game that was to determine who would make the LVLBL playoffs. The winner would advance into the round of eight for a chance at the title.

Schiffer has been the Ramblers most consistent pitcher this season. He has a sub 2.00 ERA, but more importantly, he's the guy who manager Daniel Delp wants on the mound in a must-win situation.
