CMS News: Eighth-graders to choose courses

The first Monday of every month, Salem United Church of Christ, 615 Third St., Catasauqua, holds a lunch with a variety of homemade goodies.

Gail Pileggi gets her crew together about an hour before it starts.

“We have a lot of fun doing this. We found that Monday works well because there is always something happening on the weekends,” she said.

The Feb. 3 event brought out residents to enjoy the free community lunch.

African violet workshop is planned

Master Gardeners

Penn State Master Gardeners will hold a workshop on the African violet 10 a.m.-noon March 14 at Blocker’s Coffeehouse, 309 Front St., Catasauqua.

African violet plants are readily available with a variety of leaf and flower colors and patterns. Workshop participants will learn about soil, light and fertilizer requirements, common issues and propagation techniques.

An abandoned vehicle was tagged in the 700 block of Second Street.

In the 200 block of Race Street, a driver was cited.

On West Race Street, a vehicle on tracks was investigated. The vehicle was towed.

Officers assisted North Catasauqua police during vehicle and traffic stops on Lehigh and Third streets.

In this column, Margie Jenkins, a descendant of the Weaver family, and her daughter Susan Jenkins take us back to Weaversville. The year — 1850.

Family members were housed in a number of buildings on the property. Samuel Weaver had eight brothers and sisters and eight children (four died in infancy), plus his wife, Maria Magdalene Fatzinger Weaver, so Samuel decided to build a new home.

Easter egg hunt is scheduled

CrossPoint, 1414 Pennsylvania Ave., Bethlehem, will be holding an Easter egg hunt April 4 at Clearview Park, Abington Road and Robin Way, Bethlehem. Registration begins 11 a.m.

There will be free candy and food and face painting for children.

Catasauqua: St. Mary’s to hold Lenten dinner

St. Mary’s Church, 122 Union St., will be holding a Lenten dinner 4:30-6:30 p.m. March 20 in the parish center.

The menu includes pan-seared fish or two crab patties with a choice of macaroni and cheese, cabbage and noodles or parsley potatoes. You can also have a choice of stewed tomatoes, creamed cabbage or applesauce.

Each platter comes with green beans, roll and butter.
