Good Shepherd to survey needs of persons with disabilities

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network has engaged the Lehigh Valley Research Consortium to conduct a new online survey to identify the unmet needs of persons with disabilities in the Lehigh Valley.

The 2015 Disability Community Needs Assessment will gather input from adults with disabilities or caregivers of children and people incapable of responding for themselves.

Healthy Geezer: Be careful when using supplements

Q. I'm a geezer and I believe in herbal products because they're natural and I think you should tell your readers how wonderful they are.

I get a kick out of people who are big on "natural" and "organic." Poison ivy is natural and organic. So is cobra venom.

You have to be very careful when you use herbal health products and dietary supplements, especially if you are a senior. Always consult a doctor before taking any of these products, which I like to label "alternatives."

Q. A friend who uses a lot of psychobabble described a new woman in our retirement community as having a "personality disorder." I would call this woman a "pain the neck". What's the difference between a personality disorder and just a lousy personality?

People with a personality disorder are more than just pains in the neck. They have serious trouble getting along with others. They are usually rigid and unable to adapt to the changes life presents to all of us. They simply don't function well in society.

The West Park Civic Association hosts its 33rd Annual House Tour, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. June 21, that includes 11 properties and visits to three buildings in Center City Allentown that have helped define the renaissance underway there.

The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor begins its series of five "Conversations on the Canal" dinner cruises and beer and wine tasting tours on the newly-renovated Josiah White II canal boat, 5:30 - 8 p.m. June 20. "The Corridor's Irish Past" is the theme for the first in the series aboard the mule-drawn Josiah White II on the Lehigh Canal in Hugh Moore Park, Easton.
