Matos, girls still look for positives

Janae Matos recently realized that her senior season at Catasauqua is heading down the home stretch. With field hockey behind her, basketball is beginning its final chapter and Matos wants to try and do her share to contribute some positive notes in the upcoming weeks.

One of a handful of seniors in the program, Matos believes her squad can salvage some positives despite a 15-game losing streak that began the week.

The much anticipated and reformatted District 11 wrestling tournament gets set to kick off Thursday evening at four different locations.

Blue Mountain, Stroudsburg, Liberty and Catasauqua are the four sites that will host 24 teams in the opening and quarterfinal rounds before the event shifts over to Freedom for Saturday's final day of wrestling.

With another great showing at Parkland High School on Sunday for the 19th annual Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase, three of the four games were decided by five points or less.

The one that was not that close included one of the area's local teams. In the opening game of the showcase, Bethlehem Catholic ran into a talented Abington Heights team out of District 2.

Seniors Janelle Roth and Lester Estrada were honored, along with the other Lehigh Valley schools girls and boys nominees, at the Lehigh Valley Soccer Scholar Athlete Banquet at the Northampton Community Center on Sunday evening, Jan. 12.

Tyler Trobetsky isn't totally happy with his performance on the mats this winter, but the senior is pleased that his team continues to establish itself as one of the premier programs in the Lehigh Valley.

After a commanding 51-18 victory over Wilson, Trobetsky raised his record to 10-5 overall with a 3-2 decision over the Warriors' Darkens Carriotte. Still, Trobetsky believes he hasn't quite reached his potential at the 182-pound weight class.

Once every year, Parkland High School hosts the annual Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase in which some of best boys high school basketball talent in the area and nation comes together for an exciting day of action.

Catty wrestlers have had a good week with wins over Palmerton, Northern Lehigh and Wilson.

The Roughs beat the Bombers last Wednesday, Jan. 8, 49-24.

The Roughies would get off to a slow start dropping matches at 152 and 160 before Zack Bradley won a major decision, 14-1, to cut the score to 9-4. Palmerton would take a decision at 182 to extend its lead to 12-4 before Catty went on a roll thanks to pins and forfeits.
