Girls get an extra day off

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Editor's note: With Tuesday's game rained out, Wednesday's game comes after Catasauqua Press deadlines.

It has been the kind of season for the Catasauqua softball team in which head coach Bobby Thomas doesn't have to cross his fingers or knock on wood to lay any superstitions to rest as his club takes another crucial step in the post season.

In fact, the top-seeded Roughies received an extra day of rest before they met fifth-seeded North Schuylkill in the semifinal round of the...

Not an ending they hoped for

Wednesday, May 29, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Heading into the postseason, Catasauqua's baseball team showed plenty of signs that they could surprise some teams with an extended stay in the playoff format.

The Roughies staged a late-season rally that earned them an invitation to the postseason for the first time in three seasons since they went to the state playoff bracket, and they also gained an invite to the league playoffs.

But, apparently, it wasn't meant to be.

The Roughies weren't themselves in a 14-4 loss to...

First league softball title since 1981

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by JOE ZEMBA Special to the Press in Sports

The long drought is over.

Catasauqua High School has been crowned Colonial League Champions for the first time since 1981.

"It's an awesome feeling to say we're the champs," said Janae Matos.

Catty knocked off Pen Argyl 6-0 last Thursday at Patriots Park in Allentown to bring home the gold after a 32-year wait.

Sophomore chucker Alexis Ayache spun a four-hitter at Pen Argyl in the 7 p.m. night cap to claim the title.

The Rough Riders sneak-attacked the...

A good feeling about this club came true

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Before the start of the regular season, Catasauqua head softball coach Bobby Thomas had a good feeling about his club. It was a feeling that generated plenty of thoughts of his team contending and possibly winning the Colonial League crown.

Thomas had a club that was rich with seniors and juniors, many of them who have made significant contributions since their freshman seasons, and a crop of rapidly growing freshman, a handful that could make an immediate impact.

Catasauqua senior Anthony Brinkley has been used to success on the scholastic level of middle distance running.

However, this past week he solidified his name in the history of Catasauqua greats in the sport, as he put up quite the showing at the District 11 AA Track and Field Championships at Blue Mountain High School. He bettered his school record in the 800, as he took first place in that event with a time of 1:59.62, and will move on to this weekend's PIAA state track and field...

Roughs get ready for District 11 playoffs

Wednesday, May 22, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Editor's note: Wednesday's game with Pine Grove takes place after Catasauqua Press deadlines.

Catasauqua head baseball coach Steve Bradley admittedly didn't know much about Pine Grove when they the two teams met late Wednesday afternoon in an opening round District 11 Class 2A playoff game.

"We really didn't know much about them," said the third -year head coach. "We didn't have any common opponents and we tried to track down some info about them. But, sometimes, it might be...

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

In their past four regular season games, Catasauqua's softball team amassed a total of 52 runs as they finished with an overall 15-5 record and punched their ticket for the first time to the Colonial League playoffs.

In their semifinal game against top-seeded Palmerton Tuesday night at Patriots Park, the fourth-seeded Roughies still didn't miss a beat as they thumped the Blue Bombers 15-4 in a shortened five-inning contest due to the 10-run rule. The victory bolstered the Roughies...
