Snow geese come to the Valley

Thursday, January 10, 2013 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

They're like snowflakes high in the sky. And if there are a thousand of them, they resemble a blizzard.

What I speak of are snow geese. They usually fly 3000 miles from their breeding grounds on the tundra to the Lehigh Valley around this time of year. They customarily put down on local mine holes like the one in Fogelsville, Whitehall or Northampton, or, lakes like Ontelaunee and Minsi.

Within the week, hundreds of snows have descended on farm fields in the Northampton-...

Wrestlers get a good test in Hamburg

Thursday, January 10, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Catasauqua head wrestling coach Mike Conner has yet to find his perfect lineup this season, but he hasn't been disappointed in his team's results.

The Roughies recently competed in a tournament in Hamburg over the weekend in which they faced teams in both Class AA and AAA categories. Perennially recognized as a difficult tournament, Catty came away with an overall 3-2 mark in five matches.

"That was a good weekend and a good test for us,' said Conner. "That tournament is always...

Thursday, January 10, 2013 by JOE ZEMBA Special to the Press in Sports

Catty basketball fans who didn't come to the Catasauqua Gym missed a good effort by the girls against Wilson in a 48-36 loss.

"The game was truly closer than what the final score indicates," Janae Matos said.

Underclassmen did most of the scoring as Shiloh Sziy had 17 points, Amarys Moten six, Katie Buczynski four, Sam Schnabel also scored four, and Janae Matos had three while senior point guard Olivia Falko added two.

Catty came out with a slower pace concentrating on...

All-Everything Gerald Terry, who was granted an extra year of eligibility, and Daye-Shaw Bailey, both went rip city on the nets at the Wilson Gym for 17 points a piece. Bailey banged home three from Northampton Street and Terry...

Strong, CHS get by Kids

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Jarrid Strong was determined to help his team beat Northampton in the annual recent hardwood matchup between neighboring schools.

Strong arguably did his part as he scored a season-high 18 points, but Catasauqua couldn't close the gap in a close 54-52 defeat to the Konkrete Kids. Northampton took a page from the football rivalry between the two as they registered their second consecutive victory in as many years, the same trait that has followed the football battle won by Catasauqua...

Buczynski, girls look for more wins

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

For Katie Buczynski, it has been a bittersweet season.

The Catasauqua junior forward recently helped her team snap a 29-game losing streak and then soon followed it with a victory over Northern Lehigh. It marked the first time Catty won as many as two games in a season since the 2008-09 campaign.

Yet, Buczynski, who has been the team's leading scorer and rebounder, isn't totally satisfied with her team's 2-6 start.

"It can be extremely frustrating at times," stated...
