A tough pill to swallow

Thursday, March 14, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Loss to Notre Dame still stings a bit for Catty

Catasauqua head boys' basketball coach Eric Snyder didn't see it coming.

His team entered the PIAA District 11 Class 2A championship game against Notre Dame with a 10-game winning streak, the latest triumph a convincing 84-56 thumping over Williams Valley three days earlier in a district semifinal.

In the 59-49 loss to Notre Dame in the district final, the Roughies apparently wasted too many opportunities as well as creating some missed ones.

Thursday, March 14, 2013 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

Perhaps the PF&BC's trout stocking that got underway last week may be the first sign of spring.

With the trout season opening here in the Southeast Region on March 30, Lee Creyer, Lehigh County Waterways Conservation Officer, has begun stocking local streams with a portion of the 1.84 million trout allocated for state waters.

Boys get to finals with win over Williams Valley

Thursday, March 7, 2013 by JOE ZEMBA Special to the Press in Sports

The student body Catty Crew came into the Parkland High School Gym en masse last Wednesday night before the semifinal District 11 2A boys basketball playoff with Williams Valley. They made their presence known right away.

The Roughies did the same, surprising Vikings head coach Dennis Kasper by playing up-tempo basketball and thumping the Vikings 84-56, who came from Western Schuylkill County sporting a 17-7 record.

Kasper said, "They (Catty) are the most athletic team we played all year."

Time to ice fish may be running out

Thursday, March 7, 2013 by NICK HROMIAK Special to the Press in Sports

You should have been here last week. That's usually what anglers hear, especially when ice fishing.

So was the case at Ontelaunee Reservoir in upper Berks County where fishing was good while panfish action was fair at Lake Minsi in Northampton County two weeks ago.

The upcoming weeks' weather may just be the death knell to local ice fishing. With temps in the high 40s combined with rain, both may put a damper on ice conditions rendering them unsafe.

No Roughs at regionals

Thursday, February 28, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

Catasauqua head wrestling coach Mike Conner welcomed the thought about having some extra time in his classroom after school this week.

It may not appear to be a monumental event, but it terms of his wrestling program, it was. For the first time in over 20 years, the Roughies will not have a representative in the PIAA Class 2A wrestling regionals at Wilson West Lawn High School this weekend.

Overall, the Roughies finished ninth in the tournament with 71.5 points in the 23-team field despite not having any qualifiers in the first three weight brackets.

CHS finally gets to play

If anything, the Roughies were well-tested for their first appearance in the PIAA District 11 Class 2A playoffs in two years that began Wednesday night, after Press deadlines.

The Roughies, seated first, met fourth-seeded Williams Valley at Parkland High School in the semifinals of the District 11 Class 2A playoffs. Second-seeded Notre Dame met third-seeded North Schuylkill at Allen High School in the other semifinal Wednesday night. The winners will meet in the championship game Saturday night at a site to be determined.
